The truck was hot.

Edison pulled the keys from the visor, rolled the window down, and started the F-150.

Dallas's phone call made him think about Merlinda.

He liked Merlinda, but it just hadn’t worked into anything.

Indian Wells wasn’t just another rodeo. Indian Wells was a nice rodeo. Good people. Maybe one of the first he’d gone to with Livingston.

He could hear the announcer and remember the excitement he felt being at the rodeo with his big brother.

Another tape from Livingston’s shoebox filled with classics. Edison had practically worn the tape out listening to the title song.

I turned twenty-one in prison.

Edison turned up the volume.

Life without parole.

Edison hadn’t turned twenty-one in prison, thanks to Livingston.
